Piper Serica has achieved a first close of ₹300 crore for its newly launched Bharat Tech Fund. The milestone was reached within 45 days of the fund's launch, signaling rapid investor appetite for India's high-tech ecosystem.

The fund is working toward a total target corpus of ₹800 crore. The capital is earmarked for Indian deeptech startups, with a specific focus on sectors characterized by high intellectual property barriers. These include semiconductors, defence, spacetech, artificial intelligence, robotics, and advanced electronics and manufacturing.

The Deeptech Gap

Deeptech ventures differ from standard software-as-a-service (SaaS) models due to higher capital intensity and longer gestation periods. Because these companies rely heavily on research and development (R&D) to create proprietary technology, they often face a funding gap as they move from early prototypes to scalable commercial products. By dedicating a specific vehicle to these sectors, Piper Serica aims to provide the patient capital necessary for these complex technologies to mature.

Market Confidence

The speed of the first close and the composition of the backers suggest a strong vote of confidence in the domestic tech landscape. Notably, nearly half of the commitments for the Bharat Tech Fund came from repeat investors who had previously backed the firm's first fund. This level of retention indicates that previous limited partners see a viable path to returns within the deeptech space.

Ajay Modi, Director at Piper Serica, noted that the response to the fund demonstrates that investors are viewing deeptech as a long-term opportunity. This shift is critical for India's strategic goals, as investing in indigenous capabilities in semiconductors and spacetech reduces reliance on foreign imports and strengthens national security and economic sovereignty.

Future Outlook

As Piper Serica moves toward its final ₹800 crore target, the industry will be watching how the fund deploys its capital across the identified high-barrier sectors. While the first close establishes the fund's momentum, the long-term success of the Bharat Tech Fund will depend on the ability of these deeptech startups to transition from the lab to the market. Investors will likely monitor the progress of the first batch of portfolio companies to determine if the current enthusiasm for Indian deeptech translates into scalable commercial exits.
