Shimizu Corporation and the Institute of Science Tokyo have established a joint research hub to pioneer a "building upcycling" production model. The initiative, formalized during a signing ceremony on August 17, seeks to fundamentally alter the lifecycle of urban infrastructure by prioritizing the reuse of existing structures over demolition.

Led by Professor Shoichi Kishiki of the Institute of Science Tokyo, the project is scheduled to operate through July 31, 2029. The technical core of the research focuses on the integration of structural component reuse paired with advanced exterior facade retrofitting. By combining these two elements, the partners aim to upgrade existing buildings into high-value assets that match the performance and aesthetics of new constructions while simultaneously reducing overall construction time and costs.
