Rocket Lab Deploys iQPS SUSANOO-II SAR Satellite in 'Lightning God' Mission

Rocket Lab successfully launched the SUSANOO-II Earth-observing satellite on August 20, 2026, marking a significant step in the expansion of private radar imaging. The mission, titled "The Lightning God Defends," utilized an Electron rocket lifting off from the company's New Zealand launch site.

The satellite, also designated as QPS-SAR-18, was deployed by the Electron's kick stage into a mid-inclined orbit at an altitude of 357 miles (575 kilometers). The spacecraft is owned and operated by iQPS, a Tokyo-based company specializing in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR systems emit their own signals to map the ground, allowing for high-resolution Earth observation regardless of light conditions or heavy cloud cover.

The Shift to Lightweight Radar

Founded in 2005 by a team of rocket developers and professors from Kyushu University, iQPS is disrupting the SAR market through extreme miniaturization. According to company data, the QPS-SAR satellite is 1/20th the weight and 1/100th the cost of traditional SAR satellites. This efficiency allows for the rapid deployment of constellations rather than relying on a few massive, expensive platforms.

This specific mission represents the ninth time Rocket Lab has flown a payload for iQPS and stands as the launch provider's 14th flight of 2026. The partnership highlights a growing trend of private firms leveraging small-satellite launchers to build dense orbital networks quickly.

Implications for Global Monitoring

The deployment of high-resolution SAR constellations fundamentally changes the capability for near-real-time global monitoring. Because these satellites can see through clouds and darkness, they provide a persistent eye on both stationary and moving objects, such as ships and vehicles, across the globe.

This capability is critical for several high-stakes sectors. In emergency management, it provides situational awareness during natural disasters when cloud cover often blinds optical sensors. For urban security and economic predictive analytics, the ability to track logistics and infrastructure changes in real-time offers a strategic advantage that was previously reserved for state-level intelligence agencies.

Future Orbital Expansion

Rocket Lab and iQPS are looking toward a much denser network to increase the frequency of data collection. iQPS has stated its goal to build a constellation of 24 satellites by May 2028.

Following that milestone, the company plans further expansion by 2030. The ultimate objective is to reduce the revisit time for specific regions to an average interval of 10 minutes, effectively turning the SAR network into a near-continuous monitoring system for the planet's surface.
