Rocket Lab launches germanium-free IMM Apex solar cells to bypass supply constraints

The new high-efficiency cells reduce mass by 40% and eliminate reliance on critical minerals.

Rocket Lab has announced the production release of IMM Apex, a next-generation solar cell designed to decouple space power systems from volatile mineral supply chains. The move addresses rising costs and availability issues surrounding critical materials used in satellite power.

The IMM Apex cell achieves a Beginning of Life (BOL) solar conversion efficiency of 31.5%. A primary technical advantage is the removal of germanium, a mineral that has been a staple of space-grade solar cells for 30 years but is increasingly subject to supply constraints. Additionally, the new cells feature a 40% reduction in mass compared to Rocket Lab's heritage solar products. To facilitate rapid adoption, the company designed the cell as a mechanical and electrical drop-in replacement for existing germanium-based cells, meaning satellite operators can integrate the technology without major re-tooling.

The shift from germanium

For three decades, the space industry has relied on multi-junction solar cells built on germanium substrates. While effective, this dependence has created a strategic vulnerability as germanium costs rise and the supply chain becomes more constrained. Rocket Lab is leveraging its Inverted Metamorphic (IMM) technology to solve this. This technology is not new to the company; it previously powered NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter and has been operational in orbit for more than a decade. IMM Apex represents the latest evolution of this proven architecture, scaled for broader commercial use.

Impact on mission architecture

Reducing the mass of power systems directly impacts the economics of space flight. By offering a best-in-class specific power—the ratio of power generated to the mass of the hardware—Rocket Lab enables operators to either reduce launch costs or increase the power budget for more ambitious payloads. "IMM Apex delivers exceptional performance while addressing real-world challenges like rising material costs and supply chain constraints," said Brad Clevenger, President of Rocket Lab USA.

Scaling for the constellation era

As the industry moves toward massive satellite constellations, the ability to manufacture high-efficiency power sources at scale is critical. Rocket Lab has indicated it can produce IMM technology in volumes reaching several hundred kilowatts, positioning the company to meet the demands of large-scale orbital deployments. The industry will now watch to see how quickly satellite manufacturers migrate away from germanium-based heritage cells in favor of this lighter, more sustainable alternative.
