Approximately 150 minutes into the flight, the crew received a warning that prompted a turnaround, with the plane landing back in Christchurch just before 11:30 a.m. The alert was delivered via a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by New Zealand's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

According to the CAA, the warning was issued after the agency was notified of a potential hazard by Russia's State Air Traffic Management Corporation. The CAA later clarified that the "space activity" in question was a planned Russian missile launch. This activity created potential hazards to international airspace within New Zealand's Oceanic Flight Information Region (FIR), necessitating the immediate implementation of a danger area.
"We put in place a danger area and issued a NOTAM to alert aircraft operators to the potential hazard," the CAA stated regarding the decision to warn flights in the region.
