South Africa targets domestic battery industry to capture EV value

South Africa is accelerating its push to move beyond raw mineral exports and establish a domestic electric vehicle (EV) and battery ecosystem. The strategy aims to ensure the nation captures significant economic value from the global shift toward electric mobility.

At the uYilo e-Mobility Summit held at Nelson Mandela University in Gqeberha, government officials, industry leaders, and academics convened to align the country's research capabilities with industrial goals. Dr. Nomalungelo Gina, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, told attendees that the primary challenge is not whether electric mobility will occur, but whether South Africa will successfully capture value from the transition. The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation has anchored its broader green transition strategy on two primary pillars: the hydrogen economy and the battery economy.

The shift to mineral beneficiation

Central to this drive is mineral beneficiation—processing raw materials locally into high-value components rather than exporting them in crude form. A key example of this progress is a collaboration between the University of Limpopo and the Manganese Metal Company, which has demonstrated the production of battery-grade manganese sulphate using local resources. By refining these minerals domestically, South Africa intends to integrate itself more deeply into the lithium-ion battery value chain.

This industrial pivot is supported by a growing portfolio of local EV innovations. The summit showcased several homegrown technologies, including the eKamva, the country's first 15-seater electric minibus taxi, and the Thula, the first zero-emission vehicle designed for game-viewing. Additionally, Microcare Energy presented local electric vehicle charging solutions, signaling a move toward a comprehensive domestic infrastructure.

Economic implications and infrastructure

Developing a domestic battery industry is a critical hedge against the economic risks posed by the global decline of internal combustion engines. By leveraging its vast mineral wealth, South Africa seeks to create high-quality jobs and position itself as a leader in Africa's green economy. This transition is a core component of the nation's "Just Energy Transition," which seeks to balance environmental goals with inclusive economic growth.

However, the transition requires more than mineral processing. Professor Muki Moeng, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Nelson Mandela University, emphasized that the ecosystem depends on reliable electricity and the deployment of robust charging infrastructure. He noted that the country must develop the capacity not only to produce batteries but also to test, reuse, and recycle them to ensure long-term sustainability.

The road ahead

As South Africa scales its battery economy, the focus remains on converting academic innovation into industrial participation. While pilot-scale productions and prototype vehicles have proven technical feasibility, the next phase involves scaling these operations to be globally competitive. Observers will be watching for further government incentives and private sector investments to bridge the gap between research prototypes and mass-market industrialization.
