STFC awards £6m to seven new Ernest Rutherford Fellows
Emerging science leaders will launch independent research programmes across the UK focusing on dark matter, black holes, and planetary defence.
The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) has awarded the 2025 Ernest Rutherford Fellowship to seven emerging science leaders. This investment empowers early-career researchers to establish independent programmes at UK universities and tackle some of the most complex questions in fundamental physics.
Backed by a total investment of £6 million, the 2025 cohort consists of Dr Aleksandra Sokolowska (Glasgow), Dr Benedikt Maier (Imperial), Dr Brendan Kettle (Imperial), Dr Hamish Hay (St Andrews), Dr Jamie McDonald (Manchester), Dr Lucien Heurtier (Kings College London), and Dr Robie Hennigar (Durham). These fellows will lead research spanning critical areas of physics, including the internal structure of black holes, the nature of dark matter, and planetary defence.
A Legacy of Early-Career Support
The Ernest Rutherford Fellowship is now in its 16th consecutive year, having supported more than 100 early-career researchers since its inception. As one of the UK's premier awards for physicists, the programme is specifically designed for individuals poised to make landmark contributions in nuclear physics, astronomy, and particle physics.
To facilitate this transition to scientific independence, the fellowship provides funding for up to five years. This long-term support allows researchers to build their own teams within UK institutions and serves as a strategic tool for the UK to attract outstanding overseas talent to its academic ecosystem.
