Stoke Space Raises $1 Billion Series E Tranche to Scale Fully Reusable Rockets

The aerospace startup brings total funding to $2.3 billion as it targets a 2027 orbital debut.

Stoke Space Technologies has closed an initial $1 billion tranche of its Series E funding round, significantly increasing its capital to challenge the current dominance of the launch market. The infusion of capital brings the company's total cumulative funding to $2.3 billion.

The funding round was co-led by Point72 Ventures and Spark Capital. According to CEO Andy Lapsa, the capital is earmarked to scale production, establish necessary infrastructure, and increase flight frequency. Crucially, the funds will also support the development of the company's second-generation launch vehicle.

The Path to Orbit

Stoke Space is currently developing the Nova Pathfinder, its first vehicle, which is targeted for flight in early 2027. In a fully reusable configuration, the Pathfinder is designed to carry 3 metric tons to low Earth orbit (LEO). To achieve high reusability, the company employs a specialized active cooling solution that flows super-cooled liquid hydrogen through its thermal shielding.

Alongside the Pathfinder, the company has unveiled the Nova Block 2. This larger medium-lift vehicle is targeting a 2029 launch and aims for a significantly higher capacity, capable of delivering 15 metric tons to LEO in a fully reusable configuration.

Challenging the Status Quo

Stoke Space is entering a competitive landscape occupied by incumbents like SpaceX and other emerging players including Rocket Lab, Relativity Space, and Firefly Aerospace. While many of these competitors focus on partial reusability, Stoke is pursuing a more ambitious architecture where both the booster and the second stage are fully reusable.

This strategic direction is designed to capture a specific market opening. Industry analysts note that SpaceX's Falcon 9 is expected to be phased out around 2029, creating a potential gap in the launch market that Stoke intends to fill with its Block 2 vehicle.

Industry Implications

If Stoke Space successfully achieves full reusability of both rocket stages, it could fundamentally lower the cost of access to space and dramatically increase launch cadence. The scale of this funding—$2.3 billion—positions Stoke as one of the most heavily capitalized startups in the sector, despite the company not yet having reached orbit.

What to Watch

Investors and industry observers will now look toward the early 2027 window for the Nova Pathfinder's debut. The primary technical hurdle remains the real-world performance of the active cooling thermal shielding during atmospheric reentry. Success with the Pathfinder will be the critical proof of concept required before the company can scale toward the 15-metric-ton capacity of the Nova Block 2 by 2029.
