Türkiye enters deep space race with AYAP-1 lunar mission
The Turkish Space Agency is preparing its first lunar spacecraft as the nation joins the US-led Artemis Accords.
Türkiye is expanding its national space program into deep space exploration with the planned launch of its first lunar spacecraft, AYAP-1. The mission marks a pivotal shift for the country as it moves beyond Earth-orbit operations to target the Moon.
Managed by the Turkish Space Agency (TUA), the AYAP-1 spacecraft was designed by TUBITAK UZAY. The mission's primary objectives are to reach lunar orbit and execute a hard landing on the surface. To achieve this, the spacecraft will utilize a homegrown hybrid propulsion system, showcasing the nation's growing domestic aerospace engineering capabilities.
A New Strategic Phase
This lunar ambition follows a significant diplomatic milestone: on August 31, 2026, Türkiye officially signed the Artemis Accords, becoming the 71st signatory country. The Accords, led by the United States, establish a framework for peaceful and sustainable cooperation in the exploration of the Moon and other celestial bodies. Mehmet Fatih Kacir, Minister of Industry and Technology, described the signing as "a new phase for Türkiye's space program."
Türkiye's trajectory toward deep space has been a steady progression over three decades. The program began with Earth observation satellites, including BILSAT-1 in 2003 and RASAT in 2011. More recently, the nation launched the homegrown TURKSAT 6A telecommunications satellite in July 2024. The country also achieved a historic milestone in January 2024 when Alper Gezeravci became the first Turkish astronaut to visit the International Space Station.
Implications for the Industry
The transition from low-Earth orbit (LEO) flights and satellite operations to the AYAP program signals Türkiye's intent to become a strategic partner in the global effort to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon. By developing its own propulsion systems and joining international frameworks, Türkiye is positioning itself to contribute to the broader infrastructure required for future Mars missions and long-term lunar habitation.
Future Milestones
While AYAP-1 focuses on the initial challenge of reaching the Moon and performing a hard landing, the Turkish Space Agency is already planning for the next step. A subsequent mission, AYAP-2, is intended to attempt a soft landing and conduct scientific research. This future mission is expected to potentially involve the deployment of a rover and the use of domestic launch capabilities, further reducing the nation's reliance on foreign launch providers.
