Türkiye Targets Early 2027 Launch for First Lunar Rover Mission

Türkiye will launch its first lunar rover in the opening months of 2027, marking a significant escalation in the nation's deep-space ambitions. The announcement, made by Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacir, signals the transition of the country's National Space Program from orbital satellite operations to planetary exploration.
The mission will employ a specialized hybrid propulsion rocket system to deliver the rover to the lunar surface. According to Minister Kacir, the timeline for the launch has been finalized, and the project is being developed through a consortium of domestic aerospace and research entities, including the defense firm Roketsan, the TUBITAK SAGE research center, and Delta V. To ensure independent access to space and reduce reliance on foreign launch providers, Türkiye is also constructing its own dedicated spaceport in Somalia.
A Legacy of Orbital Growth
This lunar push is the latest phase of Türkiye's National Technology Initiative, which has focused on building a self-sufficient aerospace ecosystem. The country has already established a track record in satellite development with the deployment of BILSAT, RASAT, GOKTURK-2, IMECE, and the Turksat 6A. To sustain this momentum, the government is establishing a space technopark at Middle East Technical University (METU) and intends to provide technology components for future international space stations.
