UK Defence Startup SpaceAM Secures Seed Funding and MoD Contract

Gloucestershire-based aerospace and defence startup SpaceAM has secured a seed funding round and a multi-million pound contract from the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD). This dual injection of private and public support aims to accelerate the development of autonomous sensing technologies for use in contested and extreme environments.

The seed round was backed by the Foresight Group alongside government-backed defence innovation funding. Simultaneously, the MoD selected SpaceAM as one of 13 "defence unicorns" to receive a multi-million pound contract. This award was facilitated through Commercial X, an accelerated contracting vehicle designed to bypass traditional procurement hurdles and rapidly deliver digital and AI-driven capabilities to the Armed Forces.

The Push for Defence Unicorns

SpaceAM's selection comes as the UK government pursues a strategy to cultivate "defence unicorns"—small, innovative British firms with the potential to scale into billion-pound enterprises. By utilizing the Commercial X vehicle, the MoD is attempting to modernize its supply chain and increase spending with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to £7.5 billion by May 2028. This shift is intended to reduce the time it takes for cutting-edge technology to move from the lab to the front line.

Sovereign Sensing Capabilities

At the core of SpaceAM's offering are ultra-lightweight autonomous sensing systems. These platforms integrate hardware, software, and AI developed entirely in-house within the UK, ensuring a sovereign capability that reduces reliance on foreign technology. According to Rubina Singh, investment director at Foresight Group, the company has created a "differentiated sovereign autonomous sensing technology platform" that meets critical needs across the security and defence sectors, with potential applications in other industries.

Scaling for the Market

The combination of venture capital and strategic government backing positions SpaceAM to scale its technology from TRL 6 toward TRL 9 and full commercial roll-out. This trajectory is designed to provide the military with sensing capabilities that are more cost-effective and lightweight than conventional legacy systems.

Chris Isaac, founder and CEO of SpaceAM, stated that the partnership with Foresight Group provides more than just capital, offering the structure and governance necessary for rapid scaling. Isaac noted that the current funding serves as a signal to the market that the company is preparing for a Series A round to accelerate its growth pace.

Future Outlook

As SpaceAM moves toward commercialization, the industry will be watching how effectively the Commercial X vehicle can sustain the growth of these 13 selected unicorns. While the initial contracts are secured, the long-term success of the initiative depends on whether these SMEs can successfully transition their prototypes into permanent fixtures of the UK's defence infrastructure.
