Professor Tricia Naicker of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) has been recognized for her pioneering contributions to drug discovery and the fight against infectious diseases. Naicker was named the winner of the Distinguished Young Woman Researcher category at the 23rd South African Women in Science Awards (SAWiSA).
The award honors Naicker's work in developing chemical compounds designed to combat antimicrobial resistance. As a professor of Synthetic Chemistry and the Director of the Catalysis and Peptide Research Unit at UKZN, she focuses her research on antibacterial drug discovery to improve the treatment of infections that have become resistant to existing medicines. Her efforts center on creating novel compounds that can restore antibiotic activity.

The South African Women in Science Awards serve as the flagship Women's Month event for the Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation.
