Viasat Opens 2026 Space for Good India Challenge to University Students
The STEM competition invites students across all disciplines to solve real-world problems using satellite technology.
Viasat has launched the 2026 Space for Good India Challenge, a STEM competition designed to spark satellite technology innovation among university students. The initiative seeks to identify creative applications of space tech to address pressing real-world issues across the country.
Open to any university student in India aged 18 and older—including those pursuing undergraduate, postgraduate, or PhD degrees—the competition is discipline-agnostic. Viasat has structured the challenge to welcome participants from all fields of study, not just engineering or physics. The top three winners will receive significant cash awards: ₹5,00,000 for first place, ₹3,75,000 for second, and ₹2,75,000 for third.
The competition unfolds in three distinct stages. Phase 1, the Written Concept submission, runs from June 8 to July 19, 2026. This is followed by Phase 2, the Digital Submission period, which takes place from August 3 to August 23, 2026. The event culminates in New Delhi from October 24–27, 2026, with the final presentations scheduled for October 27.
Bridging the Academic Gap
This marks the second year of the challenge in India, following its 2025 debut. The program is part of a broader global strategy by Viasat to foster space innovation in key markets, including Australia and India. By creating a bridge between academic theory and professional application, the challenge aims to feed a growing talent pipeline for the Indian space sector, which currently comprises both government entities like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and a rising number of private enterprises.
Impact on Infrastructure and Talent
The challenge emphasizes interdisciplinary problem-solving, encouraging students from business, arts, and science to apply satellite capabilities to humanitarian and sustainability goals. Viasat is specifically targeting critical infrastructure gaps in rural and remote regions of India. By focusing on emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity and Direct-to-Device (D2D) communications, the competition aims to develop practical solutions for disaster response and remote connectivity.
