Vietnam and Australia Pivot Toward High-Tech Ties During State Visit

Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam conducted a state visit to Australia from August 9 to 12, 2026. The trip aimed to deepen political trust and accelerate the implementation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP) established between the two nations in 2024.

The visit centered on expanding economic and technological integration. Bilateral trade reached US$8.1 billion in the first half of 2026, marking a nearly 22% increase over the previous year. A cornerstone of the visit was the 'Tech Connect' forum in Sydney, which served as the first large-scale bilateral forum dedicated specifically to innovation, science, technology, and education.

A Strategic Evolution

This diplomatic engagement follows a rapid escalation of ties. Vietnam and Australia officially upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in March 2024. Since then, the two countries have expanded security and diplomatic cooperation, highlighted by the first ministerial-level Security Dialogue in October 2024 and the participation of a Vietnamese naval vessel in Australia's Exercise Kakadu.

Vietnamese Ambassador to Australia Pham Hung Tam stated that the visit was expected to reinforce political trust at the highest level and inject fresh momentum into the CSP while shaping future cooperation priorities.

The Shift to Strategic Tech

Beyond traditional trade, the partnership is pivoting toward critical emerging technologies. Cooperation is currently being facilitated through the Vietnam-Australia Strategic Technologies Centre in Hanoi. This center focuses on the development and implementation of 5G, 6G, artificial intelligence, and semiconductors.

By leveraging Australia's technological expertise and Vietnam's rapidly expanding digital economy, both nations are attempting to build more resilient supply chains. This shift is intended to reduce economic vulnerabilities and enhance regional stability during a period of significant global uncertainty.

Moving forward, the focus remains on the operationalization of the CSP's high-tech goals. While the visit established a framework for deeper integration in the digital economy, the long-term success of the partnership will depend on the continued scaling of the Strategic Technologies Centre and the sustained growth of bilateral trade volumes.
