AI and HBM Demand Fuel Profit Surge for South Korean Material Suppliers

South Korean semiconductor material suppliers are experiencing a sharp increase in sales and profitability as the global AI infrastructure build-out accelerates. This surge is driven by a broader industry recovery and the specific technical demands of High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM), which is essential for AI processing.

Financial results from the second quarter highlight the scale of this growth. Soulbrain, a specialist in cleaning and polishing materials, reported Q2 revenue of 312 billion KRW, a 36.3% increase year-over-year, while its operating profit jumped 128.2% to 46 billion KRW. Similarly, ENF Technology, which provides high-purity chemicals, recorded Q2 sales of 179 billion KRW, up 9.0% YoY, and an operating profit of 27.3 billion KRW, a 16.1% increase. These figures underscore a strong upward trend across the sector.

The Consumable Cycle

The semiconductor material industry operates on a cyclical model tied directly to wafer production volumes. Unlike the machinery used to build chips, materials such as photoresists, etching solutions, and polishing agents are consumables. These chemicals must be replenished for every production cycle, meaning any increase in the number of wafers produced leads to a proportional increase in material demand.

The current boom is specifically linked to the massive infrastructure requirements of artificial intelligence. AI chips require HBM, a specialized high-performance memory that increases both the complexity of the manufacturing process and the total volume of materials required per chip. As memory giants scale up HBM production to meet the needs of AI designers, the upstream suppliers of the necessary chemicals are seeing a direct windfall.

Systemic AI Growth

This trend demonstrates that the AI boom is trickling down from chip designers and memory giants to the critical upstream supply chain. While market attention often focuses on companies like NVIDIA or memory leaders such as SK Hynix and Samsung, the growth of material firms validates the systemic expansion of the entire AI hardware ecosystem.

By shifting growth from the final product back to the raw chemical level, the industry signals that AI demand is a structural shift in production volume rather than a temporary spike. This highlights the strategic importance of chemical material suppliers; without a steady and scalable supply of high-purity chemicals, the pace of AI chip production would face a critical bottleneck.
