Boston-based water treatment unicorn Gradiant is expanding its U.S. operations with a new office in Phoenix, Arizona. The move is designed to provide critical infrastructure support for the region's rapidly growing semiconductor and data center sectors.
As part of a broader domestic growth strategy, the company is establishing a presence in Phoenix alongside new offices in Syracuse and Philadelphia. Gradiant is also launching a Global Innovation Center in Houston. The expansion follows a Series E funding round that valued the company at $2 billion.
The Semiconductor Water Gap
The push into Arizona is driven by a domestic manufacturing renaissance in the semiconductor industry. Modern fabrication plants, or "fabs," require immense quantities of high-purity water to operate. Without reliable, ultra-clean water supplies, the production of advanced microchips is impossible.
Founded at MIT in 2013 by Prakash Govindan and Anurag Bajpayee, Gradiant specializes in advanced water and wastewater treatment systems. CEO Prakash Govindan noted that every fab depends on a reliable, high-purity water supply, stating that this specific need is the gap Gradiant exists to close and the primary reason for placing personnel on the ground in the region rather than serving it remotely.
