Bangladesh Pivots to Semiconductor Design to Diversify Economy

The Bangladesh government has declared the semiconductor industry a national priority as part of a strategic effort to diversify its economy. This move aims to reduce the nation's heavy reliance on the readymade garments (RMG) sector, which has long served as the primary engine of economic growth.
At the National Semiconductor Symposium and BEAR Summit 2026, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman outlined a vision to integrate Bangladesh into the global chip supply chain. The government is leveraging a growing domestic talent pool to fuel this transition; the country currently has over 700 chip designers and produces more than 20,000 computer and electrical engineering graduates every year. While the industry is in its infancy, Bangladesh earned more than $8 million from semiconductor exports in 2024.
The Push for Diversification
For decades, Bangladesh has operated as the world's second-largest apparel exporter, trailing only China. However, this concentration of economic power in a single sector has created vulnerability. Increasing competition from regional rivals, particularly Vietnam, has accelerated the government's urgency to find new growth engines in high-tech sectors. By pivoting toward semiconductors, the administration seeks to build a more resilient industrial base that is less susceptible to the fluctuations of the global fashion market.
Engineering Over Fabrication
Industry experts suggest that the path to success lies in intellectual property rather than heavy infrastructure. Noshin Nawal noted that it would be a mistake to assume that participating in the semiconductor industry requires building chip factories. Instead, experts recommend that Bangladesh focus its resources on chip design and verification. This approach avoids the astronomical costs associated with wafer fabrication plants—known as fabs—which require billions in investment and extreme environmental controls.
Economic Implications
Transitioning toward semiconductor design represents a shift from low-value manufacturing to high-value engineering. If successful, this pivot would create a new class of highly skilled employment and increase the country's overall economic resilience. By focusing on the "fabless" model of design, Bangladesh can enter the global market more quickly, utilizing its engineering graduates to provide critical services to international chip firms.
The Road Ahead
Despite the ambition, significant hurdles remain before Bangladesh can scale its exports. The gap between current earnings and global competitiveness requires substantial improvements in national infrastructure. Specifically, the industry will need greater electricity stability to support technical operations, stronger intellectual property protections to attract foreign investment, and a further refinement of technical education to meet international standards.
