SSD Benchmarks: PCIe 5.0 Offers Diminishing Returns for Gaming

Analysis of 11 titles shows that the leap from SATA to PCIe 5.0 provides limited real-world gains in loading speeds.

The massive gap between theoretical storage speeds and actual gaming performance has been laid bare in a new benchmark analysis. A study published by Tom's Hardware examined whether the transition from legacy SATA SSDs to the latest PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives provides a tangible advantage for gamers.

In collaboration with PC enthusiast and YouTuber Dan Mateescu, also known as Compusemble, the research tested SSD performance across 11 different gaming titles. The analysis compared a broad spectrum of hardware, ranging from older SATA-based drives to modern NVMe standards, including PCIe 4.0 and the cutting-edge PCIe 5.0. The primary objective was to determine if the exponential increase in sequential read and write speeds translates into faster loading times or improved in-game stability.

The Bandwidth Gap

For years, the gaming industry experienced a paradigm shift when moving from mechanical hard disk drives (HDDs) to SATA SSDs, which drastically reduced load times. Since then, hardware has evolved rapidly; sequential speeds have climbed from approximately 550MB/s on SATA drives to over 10,000MB/s on the newest PCIe 5.0 NVMe drives.

Despite this nearly 20-fold increase in theoretical bandwidth, the software side of the equation has lagged behind. Most current gaming titles are not optimized to utilize these extreme speeds, meaning the hardware often idles while waiting for the CPU or game engine to process data. This bottleneck suggests that the raw throughput of the drive is rarely the limiting factor in the modern gaming pipeline.

Consumer Implications

These findings highlight a critical disconnect between hardware marketing and actual user experience. For the average consumer, the results suggest that investing in the most expensive PCIe 5.0 storage may not yield a noticeable improvement in gameplay or loading screens compared to more affordable PCIe 4.0 or even SATA options. While the raw numbers on a spec sheet are impressive, the real-world utility is capped by how games are programmed to stream assets from storage to memory.

The Path Forward

As the industry moves toward technologies like DirectStorage, which allows the GPU to pull data directly from the SSD, the utility of high-speed NVMe drives is expected to increase. Until such APIs become standard across the majority of AAA titles, the performance ceiling will remain tied to software implementation rather than hardware throughput. For now, gamers should watch for specific title requirements rather than chasing the highest sequential speed ratings available on the market. The transition to PCIe 5.0 remains a luxury for enthusiasts rather than a necessity for performance.
