China significantly expanded its semiconductor production capacity through the first half of 2026, leveraging a global surge in AI infrastructure demand to cement its position in the global supply chain. This growth reflects a strategic pivot toward domestic fabrication and technological autonomy.
According to data reported by the Global Times, China produced an average of more than 1.5 billion integrated circuits (ICs) per day during the first half of 2026. Total IC output for that period reached 279.8 billion units, representing a 23.1% increase year-on-year. This industrial acceleration is mirrored in broader economic data, with China's overall foreign trade in goods rising 17.6% year-on-year to 34.78 trillion yuan during the first eight months of the year.

This production spike arrives as a global AI boom tightens the supply of memory chips and drives an urgent need for expanded AI facilities. To meet this demand, China has focused on expanding its fabrication plants (fabs) and upgrading process technologies. Technological milestones are also emerging from the domestic sector. The Global Times reports that Huawei's Kirin 9050 Pro chip has become the first high-performance processor to utilize logic folding technology, signaling a shift toward more advanced architectural designs produced within China.
