IQE CEO Warns of Supply Risks for Critical AI Semiconductor Material
Geopolitical tensions and Chinese export controls threaten the availability of indium phosphide, a key component for high-speed AI data centers.
The semiconductor industry faces a growing risk to its access to indium phosphide (InP) substrates, a material essential for the infrastructure powering artificial intelligence. Jutta Meier, the CEO and CFO of IQE, has warned that geopolitical frictions are creating significant uncertainties for the supply chain of this critical compound semiconductor.
According to Meier, the primary drivers of this instability are geopolitical restrictions and Chinese export controls. Indium phosphide is a fundamental material used to manufacture high-speed optical lasers and photodetectors. These components serve as the backbone of the photonics used in fiber-optic networks and the high-speed data transmission chips required to operate modern AI data centers.
The Strategic Role of InP
Indium phosphide is a binary semiconductor that has become central to the current revolution in optical communications. As hyperscale cloud providers expand their AI capabilities, the demand for next-generation photonic technologies has surged. This has transformed the InP substrate supply chain into a strategic vulnerability, largely because China maintains a dominant position in the processing and export of these materials.

Because InP serves as a core support for optical communication, any restricted access or shortage could create a severe bottleneck for global telecommunications and AI infrastructure. The reliance on export licenses means that geopolitical friction can directly delay the deployment of the high-speed networking hardware necessary for the scaling of AI workloads. IQE is currently attempting to insulate itself from these shocks by diversifying its source base. Meier stated that the company is reducing risks through extensive cooperation with different suppliers. However, she noted that these efforts have limits, warning that if relevant policies are withdrawn or tightened, export control licenses will inevitably impact the company's operations.
