HCLTech opens ₹185 crore semiconductor lab in Bengaluru for chip validation
The 40,000 sq ft facility focuses on post-silicon engineering to accelerate the transition from chip specifications to qualified parts.
HCLTech has launched an Advanced Semiconductor Lab in Bengaluru to strengthen its capabilities in chip validation and post-silicon engineering. The move signals a strategic push by the IT services giant to move deeper into the hardware value chain.
The company invested ₹185 crore (approximately $22 million) into the 40,000 sq ft facility. According to company specifications, the lab includes 25,000 sq ft of Class 10K and Class 1K cleanrooms designed for high-precision environments. The facility is equipped with specialized tools from industry leaders including Teradyne, Advantest, Keysight, Tektronix, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. Its primary operational focus is post-silicon engineering, which encompasses electrical validation, advanced testing, qualification, and failure analysis.
The Shift Toward Specialized Silicon
This investment arrives as India's largest IT firms, including TCS, Infosys, and Wipro, pivot from traditional software services toward specialized chip design and validation. This transition is heavily supported by the Indian government's Semicon 2.0 program, which has allocated ₹1.27 lakh crore (specifically ₹1,27,500 crore) to establish a robust domestic semiconductor ecosystem. By building local infrastructure for validation, HCLTech is aligning its growth with national industrial goals to reduce dependence on foreign chip ecosystems.
Strategic Implications for the Value Chain
By focusing on post-silicon validation and failure analysis, HCLTech is moving closer to the physical manufacturing process. This shift allows the company to enter a higher-value segment of the semiconductor lifecycle, reducing its reliance on legacy IT services. As the global demand for AI-driven hardware surges, the ability to accelerate time-to-market for complex chips becomes a critical competitive advantage. Hari Sadarahalli, corporate vice-president and global head of Engineering and R&D Services at HCLTech, stated that the lab's inauguration is a milestone that reinforces India’s growing leadership in semiconductor innovation.
Next Steps and Certification
To ensure the facility meets global industrial standards, HCLTech is currently pursuing several key certifications, including ISO 17025, ISO 9001, AS 9100, and ISO 13485. The successful attainment of these certifications will be critical for the lab to attract high-tier global semiconductor clients who require strict adherence to quality and safety protocols across aerospace, medical, and automotive sectors.
