HCLTech opens Rs 185 crore semiconductor lab in Bengaluru for post-silicon engineering

The new 40,000-square-foot facility expands HCLTech's capabilities into physical chip testing and failure analysis.

HCLTech has launched an Advanced Semiconductor Lab in Bengaluru to accelerate the development cycle for global and domestic chip clients. The investment marks a strategic move by the IT services giant to provide critical physical infrastructure for the final stages of semiconductor production.

The company invested Rs 185 crore into the 40,000-square-foot facility, which is specifically designed for post-silicon engineering. The lab includes 25,000 square feet of specialized Class 10K and Class 1K cleanrooms. The facility will handle chip testing, electrical validation, qualification, and failure analysis, utilizing high-end equipment sourced from industry leaders including Teradyne, Advantest, Keysight, Tektronix, and Thermo Fisher Scientific. To meet global industry standards, HCLTech is pursuing several certifications, including ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 13485 for medical devices, and AS 9100 for the aerospace and defense sectors.

A Shift Toward Specialized Hardware

This expansion reflects a broader trend among India's largest IT firms to pivot from traditional software services toward specialized semiconductor design and validation. This transition aligns with the Indian government's Semicon 2.0 programme, which has allocated ₹1.27 lakh crore to bolster the domestic ecosystem across the entire chip lifecycle, including design, manufacturing, and packaging.

Industry Implications

By moving into physical post-silicon testing and failure analysis, HCLTech is entering a higher-value segment of the semiconductor engineering chain. Historically, many firms relied on overseas facilities for the qualification and validation of physical chips after the design phase was complete. By bringing these capabilities in-house in Bengaluru, HCLTech reduces this external reliance and shortens the time-to-market for its clients.

This shift supports India's broader ambition to evolve from a design-centric hub into a comprehensive global technology center capable of managing the entire chip lifecycle. The ability to perform complex failure analysis and electrical validation domestically is a critical step in maturing the local semiconductor supply chain.

Future Outlook

As the lab begins operations, the industry will be watching for the successful acquisition of its targeted ISO and AS certifications, which will determine the facility's ability to serve highly regulated markets like medical technology and defense. While the facility strengthens the "back end" of the development process, the next phase for Indian IT giants will likely involve further integration with the manufacturing and packaging stages of the Semicon 2.0 roadmap.
