Intel Commits to 14A Mass Production in 2028 as Revenue Surges 25%

Intel announced in July 2026 that its 14A process node will enter high-volume mass production in 2028, with risk production for internal products scheduled for the second half of 2027. The announcement coincided with the company reporting Q2 2026 revenue of $16.1 billion, up 25% year-over-year—the fastest growth rate in approximately 15 years.

Foundry Roadmap Takes Shape

The 14A node (1.4nm-class) represents a critical milestone in Intel's foundry strategy to compete with TSMC's advanced process technologies. Intel has completed PDK version 0.5 for the node, with version 0.9 scheduled to ship to customers in October 2026.

During 2027 risk production, Intel will manufacture internal chips on 14A to showcase capabilities to external foundry customers. The timeline represents a firm commitment decision, though earlier 2026 statements showed varying schedules—January earnings calls indicated H2 2027 risk production and 2028 mass production, while May presentations at the J.P. Morgan conference referenced 2028/2029 timing.

AI Demand Fuels Financial Turnaround

CEO Lip-Bu Tan credited improved execution and AI-driven demand for the strong financial performance. "AI is driving unprecedented demand for compute," Tan said during the earnings call.

The 25% growth rate marks Intel's fastest revenue expansion in approximately 15 years.

Stakes for IDM 2.0 Strategy

The 14A timeline is essential for Intel's strategy to become a major third-party foundry provider. After years of process delays that cost the company market leadership in advanced semiconductor manufacturing, achieving 2028 mass production would position Intel competitively in the advanced node race.

Tesla is confirmed as a 14A customer for Intel's TeraFab products, though no other named external customers were disclosed in the July 2026 announcement. Success with 14A remains critical for Intel to win additional external foundry customers and validate its IDM 2.0 strategy of manufacturing chips for other companies alongside its own products.

Under Tan, Intel's foundry business has undergone significant restructuring as the company works to regain competitiveness after losing ground to TSMC and Samsung in advanced node production.
