The company is establishing a new headquarters and fabrication facility in Austin to scale an unconventional approach to hardware manufacturing.
Founded by renowned chip architect Jim Keller and DIY fabrication pioneer Sam Zeloof, the company recently rebranded from Atomic Semi to Fab2. As part of this expansion, the firm now operates three distinct sites: a 120,000-square-foot chip fab in Austin, a 30,000-square-foot "fab fab" in Lockhart, Texas, and a 25,000-square-foot "garage fab" remaining in San Francisco. According to the company's official site, the rebranding reflects a specific mission to build a "fab fab"—a facility dedicated to manufacturing the tools and components required to create other semiconductor fabrication plants.
The Industrial Bottleneck
Traditional semiconductor fabrication is defined by staggering capital expenditures and multi-year lead times. Building a modern fab typically requires billions of dollars and a rigid, slow-moving infrastructure, creating a massive barrier to entry for all but the largest global corporations. Fab2 aims to dismantle this model by treating the fabrication plant itself as a product to be mass-produced. To achieve this, the company utilizes automation-driven process engineering and a custom in-browser collaborative Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tool known as "Studio."
