Linde is investing $1 billion to expand its industrial gas production complex in Phoenix, Arizona, to support the rapid growth of the U.S. semiconductor industry. This expansion ensures a critical, uninterrupted supply of high-purity materials necessary for the fabrication of next-generation chips.

As part of the investment, Linde will build and operate two new SPECTRA® air separation units (ASUs). These facilities will complement three existing units already operating at the Phoenix site. The expanded complex is designed to provide a continuous stream of ultra-high-purity nitrogen, oxygen, and argon to one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers, providing the essential infrastructure required to operate two new advanced fabrication plants in the region.

The Role of Industrial Gases

Advanced semiconductor fabrication relies on a precise supply of specialized gases. Nitrogen creates inert environments to prevent contamination, oxygen is required for oxidation processes, and argon is critical for plasma etching. Because these gases must meet exceptional purity standards to avoid ruining wafers, the infrastructure used to produce and deliver them is a strategic enabling technology for the entire chip industry.

Global Supply Chain Strategy

This Arizona project is part of a broader global strategy to secure the semiconductor supply chain. Parallel to the U.S. expansion, Linde LienHwa—Linde's joint venture in Taiwan—is investing approximately $800 million in air separation units and hydrogen production facilities for the same customer. This dual-continent investment highlights the interconnected nature of chip production between the U.S. and Asia as demand for AI processors and high-bandwidth memory surges.

Industry Implications

The scale of this investment underscores that the semiconductor race extends beyond lithography machines and silicon wafers. By establishing dedicated, on-site production adjacent to fabrication plants, Linde minimizes the risk of supply chain disruptions and ensures the process consistency required for leading-edge manufacturing. This reliability is a prerequisite for the expansion of AI infrastructure, where any fluctuation in gas purity can lead to significant yield losses.
