Mitsubishi Electric and Sony Semiconductor Solutions have signed a definitive agreement to establish a joint venture aimed at transforming industrial automation through AI-powered vision. The new company, Advanced Vision Solutions Co., Ltd., is scheduled to launch in October 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
Based in Minatomirai, Yokohama, the venture will be led by representative Tamiki Kobayashi. Under the terms of the agreement, Mitsubishi Electric will hold a 60% ownership stake, with Sony Semiconductor Solutions holding the remaining 40%. The company will focus on developing vision sensor solutions specifically for manufacturing applications, merging Sony's expertise in image sensors and edge AI with Mitsubishi Electric's factory automation (FA) control systems.
The Shift to Factory Intelligence
This partnership arrives as Japanese manufacturing grapples with severe labor shortages and a pressing need to evolve beyond basic visual inspection. By integrating Sony's CMOS image sensors and "in-sensor AI"—which processes data at the edge to minimize latency and bandwidth—with Mitsubishi Electric's ecosystem of robots, servos, PLCs, and the Serendie digital platform, the venture aims to create "factory intelligence."
