Malaysia has officially launched the Semiconductor IC Design Park, a strategic initiative designed to transform the nation's role in the global electronics supply chain. The hub aims to pivot the country's industry focus from assembly and testing toward high-value integrated circuit (IC) design.

Launched on August 6, 2024, at the PFCC in Puchong, Selangor, the park is structured to accommodate more than 400 IC design engineers. These professionals will represent a mix of local firms, international companies, and joint ventures. The project is the result of a multi-party collaboration involving the federal government, the Selangor government through Sidec, venture capitalists, and international semiconductor firms.

The Shift to 'Made by Malaysia'

For decades, Malaysia has been a critical node in the semiconductor backend process, specializing in packaging and testing. However, the IC Design Park is a central pillar in a broader national strategy to transition from a 'Made in Malaysia' identity to 'Made by Malaysia.' By focusing on the design phase—the most intellectually intensive and profitable part of the semiconductor lifecycle—the government seeks to reduce reliance on foreign intellectual property and foster domestic innovation.
