Meta has launched Muse, a personal AI agent designed to automate complex productivity tasks including online shopping, email management, and trip planning. The release marks a significant pivot for the company as it transitions from generative AI that answers questions to agentic AI capable of executing actions on a user's behalf.
Unlike traditional chatbots, Muse operates using a "Muse Secure VM," a dedicated cloud-based virtual machine that houses both the agent and user data to maintain security during background operations. To facilitate real-world transactions, the agent integrates with third-party services and utilizes "Link by Stripe," which enables secure payments through one-time-use cards featuring fraud protection and return guarantees.
A Shift Toward Superintelligence
The development of Muse is the result of a strategic shift toward what Meta describes as "personal superintelligence." This evolution was driven by a collaboration with Alexandr Wang, the founder of Scale AI. Following a significant investment by Meta into Scale AI, Wang joined the company as AI chief/director to lead the development of the underlying "Muse Spark" model. This partnership was intended to move Meta's AI capabilities beyond entertainment and toward tools that can autonomously navigate the digital world to complete utilitarian tasks.
