Micron Shares Plunge 11% as Broadcom AI Outlook Triggers Chip Selloff
Memory chip maker falls despite strong fundamentals as semiconductor sector reprices AI growth expectations.
Micron Technology shares tumbled more than 11% in a single trading session this week, dragged down by a broad semiconductor selloff unrelated to the company's own performance.
The decline was a sympathy move, triggered when Broadcom reported third-quarter AI chip sales projections of $16 billion—falling short of analyst estimates at $17.2 billion. Despite Micron having no company-specific negative news, investors punished the entire AI supply chain.
Strong Fundamentals, Weak Sentiment
The selloff highlights a growing disconnect between fundamental business performance and market sentiment in the AI-driven semiconductor sector. Micron's first-quarter fiscal 2026 results showed revenue of $13.64 billion, a 57% increase year-over-year. Cloud Memory revenue alone reached $5.28 billion.
Yet these record numbers offered no insulation against the sector-wide repricing. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index saw Micron among its worst performers as traders exited positions across AI-related names.
AI Capex Narrative Under Pressure
The semiconductor industry has ridden an intense AI capital expenditure narrative for months, with demand for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) used in AI accelerators driving valuations higher. Micron stands as a primary HBM supplier, its stock trading in lockstep with AI sentiment rather than standalone metrics.
Industry sources report order books stretching into 2027, suggesting fundamental demand for AI memory remains robust. But after a period of parabolic growth, even minor misses from sector leaders now trigger outsized reactions.
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan stated that "momentum continues" with AI semiconductor revenue expected to grow over 200% year-over-year in Q3. Yet the $1.2 billion guidance gap proved enough to spark a broader retreat.
What It Signals
The episode demonstrates that companies with strong fundamentals and record growth can suffer severe losses based purely on peer guidance. Investors appear to be shifting from blind optimism toward more rigorous scrutiny of AI growth expectations.
For Micron shareholders, the message is clear: in today's market, even flawless execution cannot guarantee immunity when the broader AI narrative faces a reality check.
