Mitsubishi Electric, Sony Form JV to Build AI Vision Sensors for Factories

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Sony Semiconductor Solutions will establish Advanced Vision Solutions Co., Ltd., a joint venture developing AI-powered vision sensors for advanced manufacturing. The company begins operations in October 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
Ownership and Leadership
Mitsubishi Electric will hold a 60% stake in the venture, with Sony Semiconductor Solutions retaining 40%. Headquartered at 3-3-3 Minatomirai, Nishi-ku, Yokohama City, Kanagawa, Japan, the company will be led by representative Tamiki Kobayashi.
Edge AI for Manufacturing
The joint venture focuses on edge AI technology that performs analysis directly on image sensors, identifying manufacturing conditions and connecting them to equipment decision-making without requiring specialized AI or optics expertise from end users. This approach moves processing closer to the data source, enabling real-time detection of product quality, equipment status, and operational changes.
Mitsubishi Electric plans to integrate the vision sensor data with its Serendie digital platform, creating a unified factory automation solution.
Addressing Labor Shortages
The partnership targets critical industrial challenges including labor shortages and the need for unmanned operations. By implementing physical AI that connects vision-based recognition directly to control systems, the venture aims to accelerate the transition toward fully autonomous manufacturing environments with more precise, real-time quality control.
