Mod Unlocks RTX 50-Series Multi Frame Generation for RTX 40-Series GPUs

A community tool leverages leaked DLSS 5 files to bring next-gen AI frame interpolation to older NVIDIA hardware.

NVIDIA RTX 40-series GPU owners can now access a feature previously reserved for the latest hardware generation. A new community-developed mod has successfully enabled DLSS Multi Frame Generation (MFG) on older cards, bypassing the artificial hardware locks typically imposed by the chipmaker.

Developed by modder dashdogy and hosted on GitHub as 'RTX40MFG-Unlock', the tool—known as 'Universal RTXMFG'—allows users to implement advanced AI frame interpolation. The mod enables fixed multipliers up to 6x and supports Dynamic MFG in compatible titles, allowing the system to target specific refresh rates. The tool effectively brings the RTX 50-series exclusive feature to older cards, providing a significant performance boost to the preceding generation.

The DLSS 5 Leak

The foundation of this unlock stems from a discovery in the gaming community rather than an official NVIDIA release. The mod leverages a DLSS 5 DLL file that was discovered within a prerelease version of NBA 2K27. By utilizing these leaked components, dashdogy was able to bridge the gap between the DLSS 4/5 architecture of the RTX 50-series and the hardware capabilities of the RTX 40-series.

Challenging Generation Locking

This development highlights a recurring tension in the GPU market. NVIDIA typically restricts its most advanced DLSS advancements to the newest hardware to incentivize consumers to upgrade their GPUs. By locking Multi Frame Generation to the RTX 50-series, the company created a clear performance divide between generations. However, the release of Universal RTXMFG demonstrates that these restrictions are often software-based rather than absolute hardware limitations.

For the end user, this significantly raises the performance ceiling of the RTX 40-series. By granting access to next-gen AI interpolation, the mod extends the viable lifespan of existing hardware, allowing users to achieve higher frame rates in demanding titles without investing in a new graphics card.

Future Outlook

While the mod is currently functional for the 40-series, it remains a community-driven effort and is not supported by NVIDIA. Users will need to monitor the GitHub repository for updates as more titles are tested for Dynamic MFG compatibility. It remains to be seen if NVIDIA will respond to such unlocks by further hardening its DLLs or if the success of this mod will pressure the company to provide broader software support for previous-generation hardware.
