ON Semiconductor Beats Q2 Estimates as AI Pivot Drives Power Solutions Growth
The chipmaker is diversifying away from automotive volatility with a $6 billion buyback and a $7 billion all-stock acquisition of Synaptics.
ON Semiconductor reported second-quarter earnings that exceeded analyst expectations, signaling a successful strategic shift toward AI infrastructure. The results highlight a company aggressively diversifying its revenue streams to reduce its historical reliance on the volatile automotive sector.
For the quarter, the company posted non-GAAP earnings per share (EPS) of $0.74, surpassing the consensus estimate of $0.71. Total revenue for the period reached approximately $1.60 billion. Growth was primarily propelled by the Power Solutions Group (PSG), which saw a 19% year-over-year increase to $829 million. This segment now represents a critical pillar of the company's financial performance. Additionally, free cash flow for the period rose to $425 million.
Shifting Away from Automotive
Historically, ON Semiconductor has been heavily tied to the automotive and electric vehicle markets. However, the company is currently navigating a period of restructuring amid an uneven recovery across its traditional end markets. To counter this, management is leveraging its leadership in silicon carbide (SiC) and gallium nitride (GaN) technologies. By pivoting toward AI power management and data center infrastructure, the company aims to capture the current boom in AI hardware requirements, moving beyond the cyclical nature of car manufacturing.
Aggressive Capital Allocation
To signal confidence in this new direction, the company has authorized a $6 billion share buyback program. Alongside this return of capital to shareholders, ON Semiconductor announced a strategic acquisition of Synaptics. The deal, valued at approximately $7 billion, is structured as an all-stock transaction. This move is designed to expand the company's capabilities in physical and edge AI, integrating connected compute functions into its broader portfolio.
Outlook and Risks
Looking ahead, the company provided Q3 guidance projecting non-GAAP EPS between $0.81 and $0.93. While the pivot toward AI data centers provides a fresh growth engine, the scale of its current capital allocation strategy remains a point of focus. The combination of heavy buybacks and a multi-billion dollar acquisition increases the company's stakes in the AI cycle. Investors will be watching to see if the integration of Synaptics and the expansion into AI power solutions can sustain growth if the broader AI infrastructure market faces a correction.
