Study Ranks HGST as Most Reliable HDD Manufacturer

A peer-reviewed study analyzing a massive dataset of hard drives has found significant disparities in reliability between the industry's leading manufacturers. The research indicates that brand choice has a measurable impact on hardware longevity, with some manufacturers exhibiting failure rates more than double those of their competitors.
Analyzing 443,000 drives totaling more than 1.66 million drive-years of data, the study identified HGST as the most reliable manufacturer. According to the findings, HGST drives maintained a failure rate approximately 41% that of Seagate drives. Western Digital (WD) followed as the second most reliable, with failure rates roughly 52% of Seagate's, though still significantly higher than those of HGST. Toshiba drives were found to be the least reliable, with a failure rate approximately 107% of Seagate's.
Academic Approach to Hardware Data
The study utilized data provided by cloud storage provider Backblaze, which has a history of releasing public datasets regarding the hardware used in its data centers. While Backblaze typically provides raw quarterly statistics, this research applied duration regression models to provide a more rigorous academic perspective on longevity. To ensure the results were not skewed by external factors, the researchers controlled for several critical variables, including drive age, capacity, form-factor, and operating temperature, effectively isolating the impact of the manufacturer.
Implications for Data Storage
These findings have significant implications for both enterprise data center managers and home users building redundant storage arrays. The Annualized Failure Rate (AFR) is a critical metric for calculating the risk of data loss and the cost of hardware replacement. When some brands fail at roughly twice the rate of others, the study suggests that empirical reliability data should take precedence over brand loyalty when selecting hardware for critical infrastructure.

As data centers scale and the volume of stored information grows, the reliance on high-density hard drives remains a vulnerability. While this study provides a clear ranking based on historical Backblaze data, it remains to be seen if newer drive architectures or different environmental conditions in non-cloud settings would alter these reliability rankings.
