Qualcomm pivots to multi-device AI ecosystem to replace smartphone-centric model
The chipmaker is integrating NPUs and high-efficiency connectivity across PCs, cars, and wearables to anchor the 'Personal AI' era.
Qualcomm is expanding its Snapdragon platform beyond the smartphone to build a unified AI ecosystem across PCs, automobiles, wearables, and XR devices. The move signals a strategic shift toward a world where AI agents, rather than a single handheld device, serve as the primary interface for the user's digital life.
This strategy took center stage at Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event on July 22, where the company showcased new Snapdragon-powered AI hardware. Qualcomm is leveraging its massive footprint—having shipped Snapdragon platforms in over 3.5 billion devices since 2007—to transition from a product-focused approach to one centered on "agentic AI." This model allows AI agents to operate seamlessly across various form factors, maintaining a consistent understanding of user intent and context regardless of the hardware being used.
The shift to agentic AI
Historically, the smartphone acted as the central digital gateway, with wearables and other peripherals serving as simple complements. However, the rise of agentic AI is decoupling the user experience from the phone. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon emphasized this transition, stating that while everything previously revolved around the smartphone, every device will now exist around the AI agent. According to Amon, personal devices are becoming the "ultimate destination" for these agents.
This sentiment is echoed by partners like Samsung. Kim Won-joon, EVP and Head of Development at Samsung Electronics' MX Business, noted that a premium experience can no longer be defined by a single product, but rather by the intelligence that connects all devices together.
Infrastructure for the Personal AI era
To support this vision, Qualcomm is integrating Neural Processing Units (NPUs) and advanced connectivity standards, including 5G RedCap and Bluetooth 6.0, across its entire hardware portfolio. By embedding these capabilities into a diverse range of devices, the company aims to ensure that AI agents can run on-device. This local processing is critical for improving privacy, increasing response speed, and ensuring reliability by reducing dependence on the cloud.

This represents a fundamental change in computing architecture. By locking in the infrastructure layer of the Personal AI era, Qualcomm is attempting to move from being a component supplier to the architect of a coordinated multi-device experience.
