Rice Wins $19.9M NSF Award for AI-Powered Semiconductor Materials Lab

The READINESS project will offer cloud-based remote access to automated equipment for startups and small companies lacking expensive fabrication infrastructure.

Rice University has secured a $19.9 million award from the National Science Foundation to build an AI-driven autonomous laboratory for next-generation semiconductor and quantum materials synthesis.

The five-year project, called READINESS (Revolutionizing AI-Driven Autonomous Experimentation for Next-Generation Semiconductor Synthesis), creates a cloud-based remote research platform rather than a traditional physical lab. Startups and small to midsize companies can propose and conduct experiments on automated equipment without owning costly fabrication infrastructure.

Remote Access Model

The platform combines artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital twin technology to accelerate manufacturing of electronic and quantum materials. Target materials include oxide semiconductors, two-dimensional materials, and diamond thin films — all critical for next-generation chips and quantum devices.

Unlike conventional university labs that require on-site presence, READINESS allows remote users to access sophisticated laboratory systems from anywhere. The model targets emerging research institutions and companies that lack both expensive equipment and specialized staff to operate it.

Part of Larger National Push

The award falls under NSF's Programmable Cloud Laboratories Test Bed initiative, a $380 million national program. While not a direct CHIPS and Science Act award, the project aligns with broader federal efforts to onshore semiconductor production and reduce reliance on foreign chip supplies.

Rice has prior experience moving academic research toward commercialization, having collaborated with UT Austin and Texas A&M on NSF-funded innovation hubs designed to accelerate the transition from lab discoveries to market-ready technologies.

Lowering Barriers for Startups

The semiconductor industry faces high capital barriers — building a fabrication facility can cost billions. By offering remote access to automated synthesis equipment, READINESS lowers the entry threshold for new companies developing novel chip materials.

Startups can prototype and iterate on materials without major capital expenditure, potentially accelerating development cycles for next-generation semiconductors. The cloud-based approach enables smaller teams to compete with established players who own their own fabrication infrastructure.
