Samsung Leads €3 Billion Mistral AI Round to Optimize Chip Manufacturing

Samsung Electronics and Mistral AI have entered a strategic partnership to integrate custom, on-premises AI models into Samsung's semiconductor design and manufacturing operations. Announced on September 9, 2026, during a state summit in Paris, the collaboration marks a significant move toward what Samsung calls "intelligence-driven infrastructure."

As part of the agreement, Samsung will deploy Mistral's AI services, including the Mistral Large model, directly within its own infrastructure. This on-premises approach ensures that highly sensitive manufacturing data remains secure and internal. Beyond the technical integration, Samsung led a €3 billion Series D funding round for the French AI startup, a move that values Mistral AI at over €21 billion post-money and grants Samsung a strategic equity stake in the company.

The Shift to Intelligence-Driven Infrastructure

This partnership arrives as semiconductor manufacturing nodes reach unprecedented levels of complexity. The volume of sensor and measurement data generated during the production of memory and logic chips has made traditional manual analysis increasingly difficult. By shifting toward an AI-driven model, Samsung aims to reduce development cycles and improve the economic viability of its chips by increasing the number of functional units produced per wafer.

Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of the Device Solutions Division at Samsung Electronics, noted that the increasing complexities of AI chip design and manufacturing necessitate continuous innovation in semiconductor technologies. This transition focuses not only on the chips themselves but on the tools used to build them.

Strategic Implications for the Industry

This collaboration signals a fundamental shift in the relationship between AI and hardware. While AI has traditionally been viewed as the end product that semiconductors enable, it is now becoming a critical tool for the creation of the hardware itself. By utilizing frontier AI models on-premises, Samsung can apply advanced intelligence to proprietary manufacturing "recipes" without the risk of data leaks associated with external cloud providers.
