Samsung Leads Mistral AI Funding to Integrate On-Premises AI into Chip Fabs
The semiconductor giant is deploying Mistral Large models locally to optimize manufacturing yields while protecting proprietary design data.
Samsung Electronics has entered a strategic partnership with French AI startup Mistral AI to integrate customized artificial intelligence models directly into its semiconductor engineering and manufacturing operations. The move signals a deeper integration of generative AI into the physical production of silicon.
As part of the agreement, Samsung will deploy Mistral AI services, including the high-performance Mistral Large model, as on-premises AI. By hosting the models locally within its own fabrication plants (fabs), Samsung aims to protect sensitive proprietary chip design and manufacturing data from external exposure. Beyond the technical integration, Samsung has also led Mistral AI's Series D funding round, securing a strategic equity stake in the startup.
Optimizing the Fab
The partnership specifically targets operational improvements within the chip manufacturing process. Samsung intends to use the AI models for defect detection and equipment optimization, critical steps in stabilizing yields for its advanced memory and logic products. According to Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung's Device Solutions Division, continuous innovation in semiconductor technologies is necessary due to the increasing complexities involved in AI chip design and manufacturing.
This operational shift comes as semiconductor manufacturing grows increasingly complex, demanding faster data analysis to maintain strict production schedules and improve precision. Samsung is currently expanding its infrastructure network through various channels, including collaborations with OpenAI and NVIDIA, as well as work with ASML on High NA EUV manufacturing.
The Shift to Vertical AI Integration
This partnership represents a broader trend toward "vertical AI integration" in the semiconductor industry. In this model, AI is no longer treated merely as a product to be sold, but as the core operational engine driving the factories themselves. By combining an equity stake with on-premises deployment, Samsung is attempting to secure its intellectual property while gaining a strategic advantage in development cycles and yield management over primary competitors such as Intel and TSMC.
