SK Hynix invests $38 billion to scale South Korean AI memory production

The semiconductor leader will build new fabrication plants in Yongin and Cheongju to meet surging demand for HBM and NAND flash.

SK Hynix has approved a 54 trillion Korean won (approximately $38 billion) investment to construct two new semiconductor production facilities in South Korea. The move signals an aggressive push to secure the infrastructure necessary to sustain the global AI expansion.

The investment is split between two strategic sites. The company has allocated 35.2 trillion won for the 'Y2' DRAM fabrication plant in the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster, which will focus on next-generation DRAM, including High Bandwidth Memory (HBM). An additional 19.1 trillion won is earmarked for the 'M17' NAND flash facility in Cheongju. SK Hynix expects the first clean room at the M17 plant to open in December 2028, followed by the Y2 clean room in June 2029.

Strategic Acceleration

This capital expenditure follows a mid-to-long-term strategy announced in June 2026. SK Hynix is already building its first Yongin facility, Y1, which is targeted for operation in February 2027. In a significant shift in planning, the company has accelerated the overall completion timeline for the Yongin cluster, moving the target date forward from 2045 to 2033. To expedite the development of the M17 plant, the company is leveraging existing infrastructure already present in Cheongju, specifically its M11, M12, and M15 facilities.

The AI Infrastructure Race

The scale of the investment underscores the critical importance of HBM and enterprise SSDs in the current AI hardware cycle. By proactively building out its domestic capacity, SK Hynix aims to maintain a competitive advantage in a market where memory bandwidth has become a primary bottleneck for AI performance. The company's strategy aligns with market projections from Omdia, which anticipate strong annual growth through 2030, with DRAM expected to grow by 19% and NAND by 10%.

Future Outlook

As the industry shifts toward more complex AI architectures, the ability to scale production of specialized memory will likely determine market leadership. While the financial commitments and clean room timelines are set, the industry will be watching how quickly SK Hynix can transition these facilities from construction to full-scale production. The successful integration of the Yongin and Cheongju expansions will be pivotal in meeting the projected demand for the next generation of AI accelerators.
