SK Hynix Perpetuals Flash Crash on Hyperliquid After Korea AI Dividend Proposal

SK Hynix perpetual contracts on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid experienced a sharp flash crash on May 12, 2026, as South Korean political rhetoric and broader market turbulence triggered a massive foreign investor exodus.
The KOSPI index flash-crashed intraday from a peak of 7,999.67 to 7,421.71, a drop of more than 7 percent. Foreign investors net-sold 5.6 trillion won of Korean equities during the session, according to multiple Korean outlets including Korea Herald, Chosun, and Yonhap.
The catalyst was a proposal by presidential policy chief Kim Yong-beom for an AI "citizen dividend" funded by excess tax revenue from the technology sector. While SK Hynix cash stock closed down 2.39 percent, the perpetual contract experienced a significantly larger decline.
