SK hynix targets 600 million tons of water savings in Korea by 2030

The semiconductor giant aims to decouple production growth from water consumption as AI demand scales.

SK hynix has set a target to save a cumulative 600 million tons of water across its Korean operations by 2030. The company unveiled these goals and its current progress during Korea International Water Week 2026 in Daegu.

According to company data presented at the event, SK hynix has already surpassed its previous conservation milestones. Cumulative water savings reached 303.37 million tons by the end of last year, beating an initial target of 264 million tons. Last year alone, the company's Korean operations saved an average of 170,000 tons of water per day—a volume roughly equivalent to the daily water consumption of 550,000 people.

Scaling Water Reuse

A significant driver of these savings is the aggressive expansion of water recycling. Water reuse increased by approximately 54% in a single year, rising from 47.88 million tons in 2022 to 73.59 million tons last year. At the company's Icheon site, the infrastructure now produces 94,400 tons of recycled water every day.

To achieve these results, SK hynix has operated a dedicated water and wastewater reduction task force since 2018. This team focuses on optimizing consumption and expanding reuse through advanced treatment processes, including multistage coagulation and ozone oxidation. Additionally, the company monitors local ecosystems near the Yongin semiconductor cluster via the ECOSEE citizen science program to track environmental impacts.

The AI Production Pressure

This push for conservation comes as semiconductor manufacturing faces increasing scrutiny over its environmental footprint. The process of fabricating chips is highly water-intensive, and as production scales to meet the surging demand for AI hardware, water scarcity represents a critical operational and environmental risk.

By targeting a 600 million ton saving, SK hynix is attempting to decouple its industrial growth from its resource consumption. Reducing the ecological footprint of its massive fabrication sites is seen as essential for long-term sustainability in a region where industrial water needs often compete with municipal and agricultural requirements.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, the company intends to further refine its closed-loop systems. "We will continue to advance our water management system to use less water, which is essential to semiconductor production, and reuse as much of it as possible," the company stated.

Industry observers will be watching whether SK hynix can maintain this rate of efficiency as it expands its capacity. While the company has exceeded its early targets, the leap to 600 million tons will require continued investment in wastewater technology and a sustained reduction in the water intensity of each wafer produced.
