SMIC has reported its second quarter of 2026 with revenue surpassing $3 billion, marking a 36.1% year-on-year increase. The surge highlights a critical shift in the semiconductor landscape as U.S. sanctions inadvertently insulate China's domestic chip production.

The company reported revenue of $3.006 billion for the period, maintaining a gross margin of 25.3%. Driven by tightening capacity and a spike in demand for AI-related components, SMIC has announced it is raising wafer prices. Co-CEO Zhao Haijun noted that the company needs to negotiate "fairer pricing" with its customers, citing a significant gap between SMIC's current rates and those of industry-leading foundries.

The Sanctions Paradox

This financial windfall is largely the result of a "sanctions paradox." U.S. export controls have effectively walled off Chinese AI chip designers from leading-edge foundries such as TSMC and Samsung. By cutting off access to global leaders, these policies have created a captive market for SMIC, which remains the only Chinese foundry capable of mass-producing 7nm-class logic.

After a period characterized by overcapacity and aggressive price cutting throughout 2023 and 2024, SMIC has transitioned into a seller's market. Domestic firms now have few alternatives for high-end fabrication, allowing SMIC to leverage its position to increase prices despite the technical hurdles it faces compared to global competitors.

Strategic Self-Sufficiency

The growth of SMIC aligns with broader geopolitical goals in Beijing. The Chinese government is aggressively pushing for semiconductor independence, with a target for 70% of silicon wafers to be sourced domestically by 2026. This state-driven mandate ensures a steady stream of demand and political support for domestic foundries, regardless of whether their yields match international standards.

Industry Implications

For the global market, this trend suggests that export controls may be accelerating China's semiconductor self-sufficiency rather than stifling it. By removing the option of using superior foreign technology, the U.S. has provided SMIC with the guaranteed revenue and market share necessary to fund its own ecosystem and refine its processes.

What to Watch

Industry analysts are now monitoring whether SMIC can translate this record revenue into genuine technical parity with TSMC. While the captive market provides a financial safety net, the long-term viability of China's AI ambitions depends on whether SMIC can improve its leading-edge yields. For now, the company remains the primary bottleneck and beneficiary of China's isolated AI hardware chain.
