Applications for semiconductor contract departments at five of South Korea's leading universities have hit a record high for the 2027 academic year. This surge underscores a growing trend of students prioritizing guaranteed employment in the high-tech sector over traditional academic paths.

According to data reported by Chosun Ilbo, a total of 5,992 students applied for early admission to these specialized programs, competing for just 210 available spots. This represents a 19.4% increase from the 5,020 applicants recorded for the 2026 academic year. The five institutions involved in this trend include Yonsei University, Korea University, Sungkyunkwan University, Sogang University, and Hanyang University.

Competition was particularly fierce at Sogang University, where the System Semiconductor Engineering Department recorded the highest overall competition rate at 66.15 to 1. Within that department, the essay-based admission process saw an even more extreme spike, reaching a ratio of 297.67 to 1. Similarly, Sungkyunkwan University's Semiconductor System Engineering Department attracted 2,026 applicants for only 55 available positions, resulting in a competition rate of 36.84 to 1.

The Contract Department Model

These "contract departments" are specialized academic programs created through formal agreements between universities and major corporations, typically industry leaders such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. The primary goal of this model is to create a reliable pipeline of skilled talent to meet the demands of the global chip industry. In exchange for a commitment to work for the partner company upon graduation, students are often provided with full scholarships and guaranteed employment.
