Three Alabama HBCCs Win $500,000 NSF Grant for Semiconductor Training

Three Historically Black Community Colleges (HBCCs) in Alabama have secured a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to launch a specialized STEM initiative. The funding supports the creation of educational pathways designed to prepare students for high-demand careers in semiconductor manufacturing and advanced technology.

Led by Drake State Community & Technical College, the partnership includes Trenholm State Community College and Lawson State Community College. The initiative, titled the Semiconductor Exposure, Exploration, and Development Collaborative (SEED), will run for three years, from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2029. The grant specifically targets the expansion of STEM access and technical training within these institutions.

The Push for Domestic Tech Talent

This initiative arrives during a period of intensified national focus on domestic semiconductor manufacturing. As the United States seeks to reduce reliance on foreign chip production, there is a critical need for a skilled technical workforce capable of operating advanced manufacturing facilities. By centering this effort within HBCCs, the SEED project aims to bridge existing gaps in STEM access for underrepresented communities in Alabama, ensuring the regional workforce reflects the broader population.

Economic and Social Implications

The grant addresses a dual challenge: the immediate economic requirement for qualified semiconductor technicians and the long-term social goal of broadening participation in science and technology. Patricia Sims, President of Drake State, stated that the award reflects a shared commitment among the participating institutions to broaden STEM participation and create "transformative opportunities for students." Similarly, Trenholm State President Kemba Chambers noted that the collaboration ensures talented students from their communities can access emerging opportunities within the semiconductor industry.

Future Outlook

As the SEED project begins its term in October 2026, the focus will shift toward implementing a collaborative curriculum and recruiting students into the semiconductor pipeline.
