Xiaomi Cuts Third-Party Ties With TSMC 3nm Custom Silicon

The Chinese electronics giant launches the XRing processor series to drive vertical integration and reduce reliance on Qualcomm and MediaTek.

TechNewsReel Newsroom · August 24, 2026

Xiaomi has officially entered the custom silicon arena through a strategic manufacturing partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). The collaboration marks a pivotal shift for the Chinese electronics giant as it moves toward proprietary hardware to power its next generation of smartphones.

According to industry reports, Xiaomi has developed its own custom 3nm System on Chip (SoC) manufactured by TSMC. The first iteration of this proprietary hardware, the XRing O1, was launched in May 2025. Building on that foundation, Xiaomi has already introduced a subsequent flagship processor, the XRing O3, which utilizes TSMC's advanced 3nm N3P process to enhance performance and power efficiency.

The Push for Independence

Historically, Xiaomi has relied on a combination of Qualcomm and MediaTek processors to drive its device lineup. While these third-party chips provided the necessary power for its growth, the move to the XRing series signals a desire for greater vertical integration. TSMC, as the primary foundry for the world's most advanced mobile processors, provides the technical infrastructure necessary for Xiaomi to transition from a hardware assembler to a silicon designer.

Strategic Implications

This shift toward custom silicon allows Xiaomi to optimize the integration between its hardware and software, potentially leading to better battery life and more seamless performance. By designing its own chips, the company reduces its strategic dependence on external vendors like Qualcomm, mitigating risks associated with supply chain volatility and licensing costs. This trajectory mirrors the strategies employed by Apple and Samsung, who have used in-house silicon to differentiate their premium devices and capture a larger share of the high-end market.

Future Outlook

Industry analysts will now watch for how the XRing O3 performs in real-world benchmarks compared to the latest offerings from Qualcomm and MediaTek. While the launch of the O1 and O3 confirms the partnership's viability, it remains to be seen how quickly Xiaomi will scale this technology across its entire product portfolio. The success of this transition depends on whether Xiaomi can maintain the rigorous design cycles required to keep pace with the rapid evolution of 3nm semiconductor technology.
