YMTC Seeks 33 Billion Yuan in STAR Market IPO to Scale NAND Production

The Chinese chipmaker aims to fund 267-layer 3D NAND expansion and challenge global leaders by 2027.

Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) has filed for an initial public offering on the Shanghai STAR Market via its parent company, Changcun Holdings. The move is a strategic attempt by the sanctioned chipmaker to secure massive public funding to accelerate China's semiconductor self-sufficiency.

The company aims to raise approximately 33 billion yuan (roughly $4.9 billion) to finance the construction of new fabrication plants and expand research and development. According to filing data, YMTC is targeting a valuation of up to 330 billion yuan. This financial push follows a period of significant growth; the company reported Q1 2026 revenue of 47.04 billion yuan and a net profit of 33.38 billion yuan.

The Xtacking Advantage

While US export controls have restricted access to the most advanced lithography equipment, YMTC has maintained technical momentum through its proprietary Xtacking architecture. Unlike traditional 3D NAND, which integrates memory cells and peripheral CMOS logic on a single wafer, Xtacking fabricates these components on separate wafers and bonds them together. This approach allows for higher density and faster I/O speeds.

Leveraging the latest iteration of this technology, Xtacking 4.0, YMTC has officially entered the mass production of 267-layer 3D NAND chips. This technical milestone demonstrates that architectural innovation can partially offset the lack of certain high-end hardware tools, allowing the company to remain competitive in a market dominated by global giants.

Market Implications

The successful scaling of 267-layer chips, backed by billions in new capital, poses a direct challenge to the market dominance of industry leaders Samsung and SK Hynix. YMTC has explicitly set a goal to become the world's largest NAND maker by the end of 2027. If achieved, this would represent a significant shift in the global memory supply chain and prove that US sanctions have not been sufficient to halt China's progress in high-end memory production.

Future Outlook

Investors and industry analysts are now watching whether the STAR Market listing will proceed without regulatory hurdles and how quickly YMTC can ramp up its 267-layer capacity. The primary question remains whether the company's record profits can be sustained as it transitions from a state-supported entity to a publicly traded company facing continued geopolitical pressure. The outcome of this IPO will serve as a bellwether for the viability of China's domestic chip industry under prolonged international sanctions.
