62% of U.S. Adults Lack Basic Statistical Literacy, Study Finds

A significant majority of adults in the United States lack basic statistical understanding, creating a critical gap in the public's ability to interpret data-driven information. This deficiency persists despite a widespread desire among citizens to integrate statistical reasoning into their daily lives.
According to a study led by Mark Ramos of Penn State and Samuel Anyaso-Samuel of the NIH National Cancer Institute, 62% of U.S. adults report having either no understanding or only limited familiarity with basic statistical concepts. The research, published in the journal PLOS One, was based on a nationally representative survey of 1,000 people. The findings reveal a stark disconnect between the availability of data and the ability to process it; only 11% of respondents state that they regularly use statistics in their daily lives.
Despite these low levels of literacy, the study found a strong appetite for improvement. Nine out of 10 participants—90% of the sample—indicated they would use statistics more frequently in their decision-making processes if they possessed a better grasp of the subject. The research was presented at the 2025 Joint Statistical Meetings in Nashville, Tennessee.
The Risk of Misinterpretation
This lack of literacy has significant implications for how the public consumes information. Statistical literacy is essential for citizens to evaluate evidence presented in news reports, social media feeds, and policy debates. Without these foundational skills, individuals are more susceptible to misinterpreting data and are less capable of making informed decisions based on scientific research.
Mark Ramos, an assistant research professor of health policy and administration at Penn State, emphasized that while the concepts themselves are accessible, they are prone to error. "While statistics are not hard to understand, they are even easier to misunderstand," Ramos stated. He further noted that statistical literacy is critical when research is invoked in public debates that directly affect people’s lives.
