According to creator Alixander Wang, the project is now fiscally sponsored by Hack Club. This transition follows the closure of the company that sustained D2 through proprietary offerings, specifically D2 Studio and the TALA layout algorithm. As part of this shift, the proprietary TALA algorithm is planned to be open-sourced, and D2 Studio will be converted into a purely client-side tool capable of operating completely offline.
The Open-Core Legacy
Until now, D2 operated under an open-core business model. In this structure, the core language remained open-source, while sustainability was driven by commercial products. D2 Studio served as a proprietary IDE, and TALA provided a sophisticated, closed-source layout engine. This hybrid approach allowed the project to scale its user base while maintaining a revenue stream to fund ongoing engineering and maintenance.

Beyond the organizational change, the transition marks a radical shift in how the software is built. Wang has announced that the next phase of D2 will be driven by artificial intelligence.
