Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind to transition into the roles of chairman of the unit and chief scientist for Alphabet. The move marks a significant leadership pivot for Google as it attempts to accelerate its progress toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).

Simultaneously, Google is seeing a departure of several high-profile AI researchers. Jeff Dean, along with Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le, are leaving the company to found Discovery Loop, a Public Benefit Corporation dedicated to automating machine learning, science, and engineering. Jeff Dean indicated that as a public benefit corporation, the new entity may make decisions that are "not necessarily in the company's purist financial interests."

To maintain a relationship with the departing talent, Google will serve as both an investor and a cloud provider for Discovery Loop. This arrangement allows Google to keep key researchers within its broader ecosystem while granting them the agility of an independent startup.
Internal leadership at Google DeepMind is also shifting. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the unit's CTO, has been appointed senior VP of Google DeepMind. In this new capacity, Kavukcuoglu will report directly to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Kavukcuoglu stated that his primary focus is now ensuring the "clearest possible path" to delivering the company's ambitious Gemini roadmap.
