Horizon Quantum Launches Beryllium to Bring Object-Oriented Logic to Quantum Coding

Horizon Quantum has released Beryllium, a high-level, object-oriented programming language designed to streamline the development of quantum software. The language aims to bridge the gap between classical software engineering and the complex physics of quantum computing.

Integrated into the Triple Alpha development platform, Beryllium enables developers to define reusable quantum data types using "classes," a staple of classical object-oriented programming. The language is hardware-agnostic, allowing code to be compiled for various quantum processors regardless of the specific backend architecture. Beryllium became available to a limited group of early-access users and hardware partners at the end of Q2 2026.

The Abstraction Stack

Beryllium represents the third layer of Horizon Quantum's four-part abstraction stack. It sits atop two lower-level languages: Hydrogen, which functions similarly to assembly, and Helium, which is described as BASIC-like. This layered approach is designed to move the industry away from "physics-first" programming—which requires deep expertise in qubits and gates—toward "information-structure" programming.

While many current quantum frameworks rely on Python SDKs for familiarity, those tools often cannot enforce quantum constraints at the language level. By building a dedicated stack within the Triple Alpha IDE, Horizon Quantum is attempting to provide a more rigorous environment for scalable software development.

Industry Implications

The shift toward object-oriented abstraction is intended to lower the barrier to entry for classical software engineers. By allowing developers to use familiar architectural patterns, the industry can move from bespoke academic coding toward maintainable, commercially viable software products.

As Beryllium moves beyond its early-access phase, the focus will likely shift toward how these high-level abstractions perform across different hardware backends. Additionally, Horizon Quantum has announced a strategic collaboration with Quantum Machines to jointly develop embedded calibration technologies, suggesting a broader push to integrate software abstractions with hardware precision. Observers will be watching to see if this object-oriented approach accelerates the transition of quantum computing from laboratory proofs-of-concept to industrial application.
