Nori Robotics Launches $1,688 Bimanual Robot to Scale AI Research
The San Francisco startup aims to break the hardware bottleneck for robotics developers with the low-cost Nori A3.
San Francisco startup Nori Robotics has unveiled the Nori A3, a low-cost bimanual mobile robot designed to make high-end robotics research accessible to a broader range of developers. The move targets a critical bottleneck in the industry where prohibitive hardware costs often restrict advanced manipulation research to the world's most well-funded laboratories.
The Nori A3 is priced at $1,688, with the company stating that no deposit is required for orders. According to technical specifications provided by Nori Robotics, the machine features two arms with 7+1 degrees of freedom (DOF) and a payload capacity of 1.5kg per arm. For navigation and perception, the robot is equipped with a Lidar system boasting a 12-meter range and four 720p RGB cameras positioned at the grippers, head, and neck. The system is powered by a battery providing between six and eight hours of operational life. The robots are assembled in San Francisco and are scheduled to begin shipping in Fall 2026.
The Cost of Innovation
The robotics industry is currently experiencing a surge in the development of humanoid and bimanual systems, driven largely by breakthroughs in foundation models and imitation learning. However, the hardware required to test these AI models in the physical world—known as hardware-in-the-loop testing—remains expensive. Most capable bimanual platforms cost tens of thousands of dollars, creating a divide between those who can iterate on physical hardware and those limited to simulations.
Nori Robotics, a Y Combinator S26 startup, is attempting to bridge this gap by providing affordable, capable hardware. To complement the A3, the company is introducing the "Nori Lab" laptop application for training and management, alongside a skills marketplace designed to allow users to share and distribute robot capabilities.
Implications for General-Purpose AI
By reducing the cost of bimanual mobile hardware to under $2,000, Nori Robotics could significantly accelerate the development of general-purpose robotics. A lower price point enables a larger pool of independent developers and academic researchers to experiment with complex manipulation tasks and AI training. This democratization of hardware is likely to increase the volume of real-world data available for training robotic models, potentially speeding up the transition from specialized industrial tools to versatile assistants.
